England in the 19th century: John Merrick is an intelligent and friendly man, but he is hated by the society because the most parts of his body are deformed. So his only way to survive is to take part in a freak show, where he is treated like an animal. Once he is discovered by a doctor, however, he is saved from this life and he is treated like the human being that he really is.
