In the early 1980s, social misfit Arthur Fleck lives in Gotham City with his mother. Forced by a mental-health problem to laugh excessively in the most inappropriate situations, he has to work as a party clown and receives plenty of humiliation in his daily life. Because he is sometimes physically attacked, a colleague provides him with a revolver.
