In 1950s Pittsburgh, the African-American Troy Maxson tries to raise his family working as a waste collector. He is dealing with racism in his everyday life and has trouble coming to terms with his lack of success as a former baseball player. With him live his wife Rose and their son Cory who dreams of pursuing a football career. This results in conflicts between Cory and his father because Troy tries to stop him in order to protect him from disappointment. Moreover, there are Lyon, Troy's son from a previous marriage, who is a broke jazz musician and Troy's younger brother Gabriel, who sustained a head injury in World War II that left him mentally impaired. All of these things pose great challenges that threaten the family structure to break down.
